Grounded Digital PDF Pattern

I called this design Grounded because it is what I aspire to be while living through a global pandemic. 2020 brought with it so many layers of pain: loss of life, loss of community, and an extra ache for Black and Brown people around the world due to racial injustices. These layers have caused so many of us mental and emotional distress. Working on this accessory helped me cope when my brain and body felt restless. Grounded is shaped like an arrow pointing toward the earth. The strong horizontal line at the shoulders creates little “wings” when worn, an intentional design element that speaks to hope during difficult times. Categorizing this garment was fun. We settled on Ponchette because it fits like a modern mini poncho. I made this design with intention. I hope that working on it will help you to feel grounded too.

After wearing (and loving) my #groundedponchette for a year, I reimagined this design as a full-sized poncho. Rather than modifying the pattern, I changed the gauge by using worsted weight yarn. Because this pattern is knit from the bottom up, it is entirely flexible. You can knit it in ANY yarn weight and fiber and make it as large or small as you want! I wanted my poncho to cover my elbows and booty, so I kept going until it did just that. Details of my pattern hack are included in the pattern.

Overview:
This design was initially published in Issue 10 of Laine Magazine. One year later, I am excited to publish this pattern as an individual download.

The stitch patterns have significance too. I was inspired to make a zig-zag lace pattern because life during this pandemic is coming at us from different angles and is ever-changing. The double seed stitch, for me, means that life is extra bumpy right now, but we will get through this.

CONSTRUCTION
Grounded is a modern interpretation of a traditional triangle shawl. We will knit two triangles from the bottom up. Leaving the stitches live on the needles or on waste yarn, we will block the triangles together to ensure their dimensions match. We will then use a 3-needle bind-off to join the triangles at the top to create an exposed shoulder seam. The stitches for the collar are left live on waste yarn and are later picked up to create a ribbed turtleneck collar. The sections are designed in high-contrast texture and color blocks.
